If you are a mature student on Universal Credit — or another means-tested benefit — it is easy to assume university is off the table. Many people fear that applying for student finance on Universal Credit will cancel their claim, or that Student Finance England (SFE) will refuse anyone already receiving benefits. Neither fear is the full story.

Student Finance England funding and Universal Credit are different systems. You may still get a tuition fee loan (and often a maintenance loan) if you meet SFE residency and course rules. Whether you can keep Universal Credit while studying is a separate DWP question: full-time study usually stops UC unless a published exception applies. This plain-English guide is for UK home students in England — especially mature learners and foundation-year applicants — and shows where free AF Education support fits in.

Start with a free 2-minute check: check if you qualify for Student Finance England.

This article is general information for UK students exploring Student Finance England. It is not advice from the Department for Work and Pensions or Student Finance England. Universal Credit and student finance rules depend on your circumstances — always check GOV.UK and your UC account / work coach, and use official SFE guidance before making decisions.

Important: AF Education helps with the Student Finance England and funded-degree application path. We do not give personalised DWP benefit calculations, and we cannot guarantee that Universal Credit will continue (or stop) in your case. Only DWP decides your claim.

Universal Credit vs Student Finance — the basics

Two separate systems decide different things. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) administers Universal Credit. Student Finance England (via the Student Loans Company) administers undergraduate student finance for eligible students in England. Passing an SFE assessment does not decide your UC entitlement, and being on benefits does not automatically block an SFE application.

For most undergraduate courses, SFE support has two main parts:

  • Tuition Fee Loan — paid to your university for tuition fees.
  • Maintenance Loan — paid to you for living costs.

There is no upper age limit for undergraduate SFE in England. Returning at 30, 40 or 50 is common — see going to university at 30, 40 or 50 and funded degrees for mature students. Official overview: GOV.UK student finance.

Can you study while on Universal Credit?

Whether you can claim Universal Credit while studying depends on your study pattern, course level, and whether you meet a published exception. Always confirm against official guidance and your own UC account.

Full-time study (usual rule)

You cannot usually get Universal Credit if you are studying full-time. GOV.UK lists exceptions — for example responsibility for a child; living with a partner who is eligible for UC; certain disability-related routes where limited capability for work was assessed before the course; Migration Notice cases; and a few other published situations.

Do not assume you fit an exception because a friend did, or because you are a parent in general. Exception rules are specific. Read the official pages and, if needed, raise the question through your UC journal or an independent welfare-rights adviser:

Tip: Note what GOV.UK says for your study pattern, then confirm against your claim via your UC journal or work coach. AF Education will not tell DWP how to decide your award.

Part-time study

You may remain eligible for Universal Credit if you study part-time and can still meet your work-related requirements. Your work coach may ask for course evidence. This remains a DWP decision — check GOV.UK and your claim.

Advanced vs non-advanced education (why it matters)

A degree — and a foundation year that forms part of higher education — is generally advanced education for UC purposes. That affects how student rules apply. Do not invent course lists: use Universal Credit education course levels.

How Student Finance interacts with benefits (high-level)

If you are entitled to Universal Credit while studying, GOV.UK sets out how student funding is treated. At a high level:

  • Maintenance loan (living costs) is generally treated as student income and can reduce UC.
  • Tuition fee loan is generally excluded.
  • The maximum eligible maintenance loan can sometimes be taken into account even if you do not borrow the full amount — confirm current GOV.UK wording.
  • Special Support elements (where they apply) are generally treated differently and are often not taken off UC in the same way — follow the official explanation only.

Assessment periods and holidays can change the practical result. Do not DIY an exact UC figure from a blog worksheet. Use your UC account, GOV.UK, and welfare advice if your situation is complex.

Caution: This is general information only. Your award depends on your claim. Confirm with your Universal Credit account / DWP and with Student Finance England. AF Education does not replace official advice or a welfare-rights adviser.

Mature students on benefits — what usually matters

Many people searching for student finance on benefits are parents, carers, career changers, and adults returning after years away from education. Age alone does not stop undergraduate SFE in England. Being on Universal Credit or another benefit does not, by itself, mean SFE will refuse you.

Parents and carers often look carefully at full-time UC exceptions (for example responsibility for a child). That still needs a personal check against GOV.UK and your claim — it is not a blanket rule that “all parents keep UC”. For maintenance loans, SFE may assess household income and independent-student status; use official assessed-and-paid guidance rather than informal calculators.

Also useful: balancing university with work and family and benefits of a funded university degree.

Foundation year funding if you’re on benefits

Many mature students on benefits enter via a foundation year — especially with few or no A-levels. An integrated foundation year on a designated undergraduate course can normally attract undergraduate SFE (tuition and, where eligible, maintenance) if you enrol for the full extended course. See Student finance: how you’re assessed and paid 2026 to 2027.

Two caveats for Universal Credit readers:

  • A foundation year usually still counts toward funded years of study.
  • SFE funding does not automatically mean UC continues — DWP study rules still apply.

Pathway reading: how foundation years work in the UK and degrees without A-levels or UCAS points.

Reassurance: Many mature students successfully explore funded foundation-year routes while separately clarifying UC with DWP. Treat the two processes as linked in real life, but decided by different organisations.

Common myths about student finance on Universal Credit

  • “If I’m on UC I can’t get student finance.” False. SFE eligibility is separate. Many people on benefits still qualify for tuition and maintenance loans if residency and course rules are met.
  • “A maintenance loan won’t affect UC.” Often false if you remain on UC: living-cost student income is generally taken into account.
  • “Tuition fee loans reduce UC pound-for-pound.” Generally tuition fee loans are excluded — still verify on GOV.UK for your situation.
  • “There’s an age cut-off for mature students.” There is no upper age limit for undergraduate SFE in England.
  • “Foundation years aren’t funded.” Integrated foundation years on designated undergraduate courses often attract undergraduate SFE — check course designation and official guidance.
  • “AF Education (or anyone) can guarantee my UC stays the same.” Nobody can. Only DWP decides your claim.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Student Finance England funding if I’m on Universal Credit?

Yes, possibly — SFE and Universal Credit are separate. You may still qualify for tuition and maintenance loans if you meet SFE residency and course rules. Keeping UC while studying is a different DWP question with strict full-time exceptions. See Universal Credit and students.

Will starting a full-time degree stop my Universal Credit?

Full-time students usually cannot get UC unless they meet a published exception (for example responsibility for a child, or certain partner, disability or migration situations on GOV.UK). Confirm on the official pages and with your claim — do not assume.

Does my maintenance loan reduce Universal Credit?

If you remain entitled to UC, maintenance (living-cost) student income is generally taken into account and can reduce UC; tuition fee loans are generally excluded. Confirm details on GOV.UK and via your UC journal or an adviser — avoid unofficial calculators.

Can mature students on benefits get student finance?

Age alone does not stop undergraduate SFE in England, and benefits receipt does not automatically block an application. Use the free eligibility checker and official SFE guidance.

Is a foundation year funded if I’m on benefits?

An integrated foundation year on a designated undergraduate course can often attract undergraduate student finance if you enrol for the full course length. UC entitlement still follows DWP study rules separately.

Can I study part-time and stay on Universal Credit?

Part-time study may be compatible with UC if you can meet work-related requirements. Your work coach may ask for course evidence. See Universal Credit eligibility.

Will AF Education tell DWP what to do about my claim?

No. AF Education provides free help with SFE and funded degree / foundation-year applications for UK home students. For UC decisions, use GOV.UK, your UC account, and independent welfare advice if needed.

What’s the first step if I’m on benefits and want a funded degree?

Check SFE fit with the free eligibility checker, read GOV.UK UC-and-students guidance for your study pattern, then get free AF Education support to choose a course or foundation pathway and complete applications. Keep DWP questions on official channels.

Next steps

Funded undergraduate study — including via a foundation year — can still be worth exploring if Universal Credit or other benefits are part of your life. Student finance on Universal Credit is two conversations: SFE about loans and eligibility, and DWP about whether studying affects your claim. Check the official sources above and do not rely on guarantees from any adviser or website.
