As a UK home student, English language proficiency is typically assumed. However, if prior education was not in English or proficiency is questioned during the application process, proof of proficiency is required. Proficiency can be demonstrated through:

Previously Studied Qualifications in English:

• 45 credits at Level 2/3, 90 credits at Level 4/5/6, or GCSE English Language (minimum grade C/4) completed within the last 5 years.

Accepted Tests (valid for 2 years):

Duolingo:

• Undergraduate: 105 overall (95 Literacy, 85 Conversation, 105 Comprehension, 75 Production).

IELTS:

• Undergraduate: 6.0 overall (no less than 5.5 in each element).

TOEFL iBT: 80 overall (20+ in each component).

Pearson PTE: 54 overall (54 in each component).

On-Campus Test of English (OCTOE): 60% overall (no component below 50%, IELTS equivalent 6.0).

UCLan London offers standard, non-standard, and part-standard entry routes, with requirements varying by level of study. All applicants must provide supporting evidence to enroll.

Undergraduate Courses

Foundation Year

Standard Entry:

• 3 GCSEs (A*-C or 9-4) or equivalent (e.g., Level 2 or 3 qualification with a minimum of 45 credits).
• Equivalency of qualifications is determined using ECCTIS.

Non-Standard Entry:

• Minimum of 12 months of full-time appropriate professional work experience, supported by references.
• Assessed via Personal Statement, CV, and Reference.

Level 4 Entry

Standard Entry:

• 3 GCSEs (A*-C or 9-4) or equivalent, and 2 A-Levels (A*-E) or equivalent (e.g., 80 UCAS tariff points, such as grades CDD).
• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: Grades MMM (60 credits).
• Access to HE Diploma: 60 credits with a minimum of 45 at Level 3 (equivalent to 96 UCAS points, with at least 45 at merit).
• Equivalency of qualifications checked using ECCTIS.

Specific Requirements:

• BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance: Proof of GCSE Maths (C/4 or above). Applicants may bypass this by completing a Maths Module during induction.

Non-Standard Entry:

• Minimum of 24 months of full-time appropriate professional work experience, supported by references.
• Assessed via Personal Statement, CV, and Reference.

Additional Notes:

• Applicants missing part of standard entry can provide a CV and reference for part-standard entry.
• 60 credits at Level 4 or above may substitute for GCSEs and A-Levels.
• A completed QAA-approved Access to Higher Education Diploma is accepted.
• More than 90 credits at Level 3 can substitute for missing Level 2s (minimum 135 credits total, with at least 90 at Level 3 or higher).

Top-Up / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Entry

Standard Entry:

HNDs (achieved within the last 5 years) or 240 Higher Education credits (at least 120 at Level 5).

At least 180 of the 240 credits must be in a related subject area (e.g., Business, Accounting).

Top-up routes (e.g., BA Business Administration Top-up) require at least 30 credits related to the theme.

HNDs older than 5 years require a CV and Reference covering the time since study to demonstrate skill upkeep.

RPL Notes:

• RPL can be used for Level 5 entry (e.g., 120 credits at Level 4) but not for completed degrees.
• RPL is at the discretion of academic tutors and is not offered for specific programs with strict accreditation requirements (e.g., Accounting and Finance in some cases).
• Specific programs (e.g., Accounting and Finance) have additional RPL requirements, such as relevant professional qualifications.

General Notes

• Applicants meeting standard entry requirements may be signed off directly by the admissions team.
• Non-standard applicants are assessed by an admissions tutor.
• UK qualifications studied within the last 7–10 years may have results on the Government’s Learning Record Service (LRS).
• There is no list of banned study centers for Level 3 qualifications at UCLan London.

For select courses—particularly in professional or creative fields such as Writing, Computing, or those requiring a Speaking Test—an interview may form part of the admissions process.

Invitation to Interview

If an interview is required, you will receive an email with full instructions.

Interview Format

Interviews may be conducted either online via Microsoft Teams or in person on campus, depending on the course. Full details will be provided in your invitation.

Written Task (if applicable)

Some applicants may be asked to complete a short 15-minute written statement on the day, designed to assess your communication skills and personal motivation related to your course of interest.

Computing Task (if applicable)

For Computing applicants, a practical computer-based task may be required. You will be provided with a laptop containing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, along with the task and relevant materials on the desktop. You’ll be asked to complete the task independently, demonstrating your basic digital literacy and familiarity with essential software.

Preparation Requirements

Depending on the course, you may need to complete a pre-interview task or bring specific documents such as a photo ID or a portfolio.

During the Interview

The interview is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge, values, and motivation for the course, while also asking any questions about your future academic experience.
