Birmingham Newman University offers a foundation year to complement our undergraduate degrees. The Foundation Year is the first year of a four-year degree in Health and Social Care.
The foundation year provides an alternative route to studying Health and Social Care for those unable to meet the traditional entry requirements for this degree programme. Apply via UCAS for BSc Health and Social Care (with Foundation Year) and after successfully completing the foundation year you will progress onto the remaining three years of the degree, dependent on meeting the progression requirements.
BSc Allied Health & Social care with Foundation is offered by Birmingham Newman University in partnership with CECOS. Students can choose from flexible class schedules such as Weekday, allowing them to balance education with other commitments. The programme is offered in Full Time study modes, ensuring accessibility for learners. It supports various academic pathways, including Bachelors levels, making it suitable for a wide range of students seeking professional or academic advancement. Entry Requirements for Birmingham Newman University
Foundation Year
Applicants must apply through UCAS.
Academic Requirements:
- Ideally, applicants should have 48 UCAS Tariff Points.
Alternative Entry:
- Applicants without formal qualifications may still be considered if they have significant work and life experience that demonstrates the ability to study at degree level.
- Please note that progression to different degree pathways after the Foundation Year may have additional entry requirements.
Level 4 Entry
Academic Requirements:
- Minimum 112 UCAS Tariff Points, including at least CC at A Level or equivalent, such as:
- MM in a BTEC Diploma
- MPP in a BTEC Extended Diploma
Access to Higher Education Diploma:
- Applicants can meet the entry requirements with an appropriate combination of Distinction, Merit, and Pass grades from a completed Level 3 Access course.
T Levels:
- Appropriate T Levels are accepted as part of the standard entry requirements.
Foundation Degree Progression:
- Applicants with a Level 3 Foundation Degree in Business or Accounting & Finance may be considered for Level 4, subject to strong academic performance.
- Applicants with a Foundation Degree in other subjects may also be considered if they have excellent academic results and successfully pass a pre-admission interview with the Programme Lead.
Mature Applicants:
- Applicants with relevant professional qualifications and work experience may be considered through an interview-based assessment.
- A successful pre-admission interview with the Programme Lead is required.
Top-Up Entry
Applicants must have:
- 120 credits at Level 4, and
- 120 credits at Level 5
These credits must be from a relevant Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND).
English Language Requirements for Birmingham Newman University
- Applicants without a recognised English language qualification must pass the CECOS English Language Screening Test.
- The assessment evaluates your Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening skills under supervised conditions.
- Depending on your results, you may be required to complete pre-sessional English classes and pass a final English examination before enrolling on your chosen course.
- Applicants with a recognised English language qualification are exempt from this assessment.
- The English language screening test takes approximately 90 minutes to complete.
Interview Process in Birmingham Newman University
Admissions Interview
Once your application has been submitted, the CECOS Admissions Team will review it to ensure it is complete and that you meet the course entry requirements.
If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an online interview with a member of the CECOS Academic Team. The interview typically lasts around 30 minutes.
During the Interview
The interview is designed to assess:
- Your educational and/or professional background.
- Your understanding of the course and your readiness to study.
- Your knowledge of the subject area, industry, and related career opportunities.
All applicants who meet the entry requirements are required to complete an academic interview as part of the admissions process.
Standard Entry Applicants
If you are applying through the Standard Entry (Academic Achievement) route, you will be asked about:
- Your educational background.
- Why you have chosen the course.
- How the course will support your future career or professional development.
