Course Overview
Enhance your skills and gain the theoretical knowledge required to become a qualified, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) registered, counsellor or psychotherapist.
This MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy in designed to allow you to make clear links between academic theoretical input and current or future practice, offering a mix of taught sessions in class and a practice placement opportunity in a relevant therapeutic setting. This programme is aligned with UN Sustainability Goal 3 – to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
You’ll learn approaches and models in counselling and psychotherapy, awareness of diversity and cultural competence, communication skills and self-reflection, therapeutic approaches, ability to identify, plan and implement appropriate intervention and meet need, will form a core thread to the programme.
Academic teaching will be delivered by a combination of qualified staff, experts in the field of counselling and psychotherapy, and on site/in clinic practice supervisors.
You can expect a range of teaching delivery models and different forms of assessment, from written assignments to viva presentations, culminating in a final research project linked to a specific area of interest within the field.
Specific Entry Requirements:
All applicants:
- B2 or UK GCSE at grade 4/C or previous UK Degree or SELT English test (where an international Degree provided).
- Admissions interview and academic interview.
Degree route:
- A 2:2 degree or equivalent qualification awarded within the last 5 years from the UK or a majority English language speaking country.
- Experience of counselling/psychotherapy skills derived from professional or voluntary roles for a minimum of six months to the start of the academic year.
- Complete application form including 500-word personal statement. This must include evidence of a commitment to engage with personal therapy and a willingness to complete 100 supervised client contact hours in a clinical setting.
Work experience route:
- Professional experience in a related setting.
- Experience of counselling/psychotherapy skills derived from professional or voluntary roles for a minimum three years to the start of the academic year.
- Complete application form including 500-word personal statement and 1000-word reflective task. This must include evidence of a commitment to engage with personal therapy and a willingness to complete 100 supervised client contact hours in a clinical setting.
MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy is offered by Bath Spa University in partnership with GBS. Postgraduate Entry Requirements for Bath Spa University
UK / English-Speaking Country Degree (Completed Within 5 Years)
Applicants must provide:

Non-English-Speaking Country Degree (Completed Within 5 Years)
Applicants must provide:
- A minimum 2:2 degree classification.
- Evidence of CEFR B2 English language proficiency.
- A 300-word personal statement.
- A 1,000-word reflective task.
- Successful completion of an on-campus interview.
- Completion of an APEL assessment (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning), where required.
English Language Requirements for Bath Spa University
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of their English language proficiency.
English ability can be demonstrated through one of the following:
Accepted Evidence
- Previous qualifications studied and completed in English.
- GCSE English Language: Minimum Grade C/4 (or equivalent), completed within the last 5 years.
- Other qualifications taught in English, subject to approval by GBS.
Accepted English Tests
English language test results must be valid for 2 years.
CEFR Level B2 or equivalent:
- Undergraduate Programmes: IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each component.
- Other accepted tests include:
- TOEFL
- Pearson PTE
- GBS Internal English Assessment (details available through GBS Admissions)
Interview Process in Bath Spa University

The interview consists of two parts:
1. Speaking Interview
During the speaking interview, you may be asked about:
