Searching for how to reapply student finance, complete a student finance renewal, or apply again with Student Finance England (SFE) usually means one thing: funding is not a one-off award. For most undergraduate courses in England you must reapply for each year of your course — even when you are a continuing student on the same course and provider.
This FAQ is for UK home students (including mature and foundation-year routes) renewing for the next academic year, updating household income, changing course or provider, or returning after a personal-reasons break. First-timers: how to apply step by step. Related: first payment and instalments, Tuition Fee Loan vs Maintenance Loan, how much Maintenance Loan, interest rates, when repayments start, part-time SFE, Special Support Element. Light mature context: university for mature students.

This article is general information for UK home students exploring Student Finance England. It is not advice from Student Finance England, the Student Loans Company, or the Department for Education. Your eligibility, household income, course, living arrangements and start date decide what you get — always verify on GOV.UK and your Notification of Entitlement. Process steps below follow official GOV.UK guidance and may change. AF Education is not SFE or SLC.

Quick answer: do you need to reapply each year?
Yes — GOV.UK is clear that you need to reapply for student finance for each year of your course. Signing in and renewing is the normal continuing-student path; it is not the same as a first-time account setup. Keep details up to date while you study — household income or bank changes can affect payments. Sources: GOV.UK how to apply (Step 7) and GOV.UK apply online.
Tip: “Reapply”, “renewal” and “apply again” usually mean the same yearly cycle. What changes is online vs post, and whether you are continuing, transferring, or returning after time out.
Who counts as a continuing student?
On GOV.UK you are a continuing student if you are moving on to the next year of your course, or transferring onto a new course from your old course. If you are repeating a year, or returning after time out for personal reasons, you may still need to reapply — and you may need a letter explaining the break (below). Do not assume last year’s award rolls over.
Reapply vs a brand-new application
For most continuing students on full support (Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan), sign in to your existing student finance account and apply online — same CRN, new year, updated circumstances.
A new student path means setting up an account, completing the first application, household income where needed, and identity proof if asked. Brand new to SFE? Use step-by-step apply instead of this renewal guide.
If you are only eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan (tuition fee only funding), you must apply by post — including as a continuing student. The wrong route can delay your application.
Reassurance: Online renewal is usually simpler than a first application — but processing still typically takes around 4 weeks, and extra evidence may be requested. Leave time before term.
When can you apply for 2025/26 and 2026/27?
If you normally live in England, you can apply online for 2025 to 2026 and 2026 to 2027. You can apply up to 9 months after the start of the academic year. Courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 use a different process; applications open in September 2026 — confirm on GOV.UK.
Continuing full-time students who cannot apply online use the paper PR1 form for 2026 to 2027. Return the form and evidence by 19 June 2026 to help get your first payment at the start of term. After that date SFE will still try to process it, but payment may miss term start. Returned more than 9 months after the academic year starts, it may not be processed and you may lose full entitlement. See GOV.UK PR1 forms and notes for continuing 2026 to 2027.
Deadline note: We do not invent cut-offs. Use the official PR1 / apply-online pages for the date that matches your situation. Late does not always mean impossible — but it can mean delayed first payment or, beyond nine months, a refused processing window.
What to update when you renew
Renewal is when SFE reassesses the next year. Check or refresh: course and provider (including transfers/clearing); living arrangements (for example parents vs halls — this can change Maintenance Loan entitlement); household income evidence for parents/partner where assessed; bank details for instalments; and contact details (especially for postal forms).
GOV.UK also says you must update your application if circumstances change after you apply — for example clearing or a change in where you will live. Keep details current while studying; changes can affect payments. After registration, Tuition Fee Loans go to your provider and Maintenance Loans usually to your bank each term once attendance is confirmed — see first payment and instalments and fee loan vs Maintenance Loan.
Changing course or provider
Transferring course still counts as continuing on GOV.UK — but your application must show the new course and provider. Update after clearing. Wrong course details often mean fee loans or payments do not match what the university expects. Switching to part-time has separate rules — see part-time Student Finance England.
Returning after a personal-reasons break
Reapply if you previously studied for more than a year but stopped for personal reasons — for example illness, pregnancy, caring, or a bereavement. Full support: apply online via your account. Tuition-fee-only: apply by post.
Include a letter explaining why you suspended your studies plus supporting evidence. GOV.UK examples include a headed letter from your doctor or social services, a headed letter from your university or college, and copies of birth or death certificates. You may need more than one piece. If you forgot to attach them, upload via your account or post with your customer reference number (CRN). Your account is typically updated in about 4 weeks, with an email when ready to view.
Tip: Returning after a break is not the same as a casual “I forgot to renew” click. Build the letter and evidence into your plan before term so processing time does not collide with registration.
What happens if you miss renewal?
If you miss the recommended PR1 paper deadline (19 June 2026 for first payment at term start), your application can still be processed — but the first payment may miss teaching start. You can apply up to nine months after the academic year starts; beyond that, it may not be processed and you may lose full entitlement for that year.
Missing renewal does not cancel previous years’ loans, but it can leave new-year fees unpaid and stop Maintenance Loan instalments. Check your SFE account and your provider’s funding team. Re-read your Notification of Entitlement each year. Interest and repayment for money already borrowed: interest rates and when repayments start.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to reapply for student finance every year?
Yes. GOV.UK states you need to reapply for student finance for each year of your course. Continuing students usually sign in to their existing account and apply online if they are eligible for full support.
What is the difference between reapplying and a new student finance application?
Reapplying (renewal) is for continuing students — next year of the same course, or transferring course — using your existing account where online full-support apply is available. A new application is for first-time students who set up an account and complete identity and household steps from scratch. First-timers: see our step-by-step apply guide.
Can I reapply online for 2026/27?
If you normally live in England and are eligible for full support (Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan), you can apply online for 2025/26 and 2026/27. Tuition-fee-only applicants must apply by post. Courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 follow a different process; applications open in September 2026.
What is the PR1 deadline for continuing students in 2026/27?
For the PR1 continuing full-time paper route, return the form and evidence by 19 June 2026 to help get your first payment at the start of term. Late applications may still be processed but payment can be delayed. More than nine months after the academic year starts, the application may not be processed.
What evidence do I need if I return after a personal-reasons break?
Include a letter explaining why you suspended studies plus supporting evidence (for example headed letters from a doctor, social services, or your university/college, or birth/death certificates). Upload via your account or post with your CRN. Account updates typically take about 4 weeks.
Will my household income be checked again when I renew?
Often yes for income-assessed Maintenance Loan support. Parents or a partner may need to confirm updated household income. Living arrangements and other circumstances can also change what you get — update your application if they change after you apply.
What if I miss student finance renewal?
Apply as soon as you can within the allowed window (up to nine months after the academic year starts). Missing a recommended paper deadline can delay the first payment; waiting too long can mean the application is not processed. Check your SFE account and speak to your university funding team.
Where should I start if I am unsure I still qualify?
Run the free eligibility checker, then renew via your SFE account or the correct postal form. AF Education helps UK home students with the funded-course and SFE path for free — only SFE/SLC confirm amounts on your Notification of Entitlement.
Next steps
Takeaway: renew each year — online for full support where eligible, by post if tuition-fee-only — update income and living details, and allow about four weeks’ processing. Returning after a personal-reasons break needs a letter and evidence. Confirm dates and amounts on GOV.UK and your Notification of Entitlement.
