Looking up student finance for parents usually means one question: can you fund a degree (or foundation year) while supporting children — and which extra grants sit on top of ordinary Student Finance England (SFE) loans? For UK home students in England the core stack is a Tuition Fee Loan plus a Maintenance Loan, with three dependants grants often in play: Parents’ Learning Allowance (PLA), the Childcare Grant, and the Adult Dependants’ Grant (ADG).

This FAQ is for parents considering a funded undergraduate or foundation-year course — including mature students returning to study. Related overview (older sibling): student finance for parents 2026 grant overview. Also: Tuition Fee Loan vs Maintenance Loan, how much Maintenance Loan, how to apply step by step, how to reapply, Special Support Element, student finance on Universal Credit / benefits, part-time SFE. This article is general information for UK home students exploring Student Finance England. It is not advice from Student Finance England, the Student Loans Company, or the Department for Education. Figures below follow current GOV.UK guidance for Parents’ Learning Allowance, Childcare Grant and Adult Dependants’ Grant and may change. Your Notification of Entitlement is decisive. AF Education is not SFE or SLC.

Important: AF Education helps UK home students with the SFE and funded undergraduate / foundation-year application path. We cannot process your grant claim, override an SLC decision, or replace GOV.UK. This service is not for international students.

Quick answer: what student finance can parents get?

Most eligible full-time undergraduates in England can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (to the provider) and a Maintenance Loan (living costs, usually termly after registration). With dependent children — or an adult who depends on you financially — you may also qualify for extra non-repayable grants:

  • Parents’ Learning Allowance — course-related help when you have dependent children (£50–£2,024 a year depending on household income).
  • Childcare Grant — help with registered childcare costs while you study (up to 85% of costs, capped).
  • Adult Dependants’ Grant — help if another adult depends on you financially (up to £3,545; not for a child).

These grants sit on top of other undergraduate student finance where you qualify. They are not 15/30 hours free childcare. Confirm amounts on GOV.UK and your Notification of Entitlement.

Tip: Think in layers — fee loan + maintenance loan first, then PLA, Childcare Grant and ADG. Universal Credit and Tax-Free Childcare can conflict with Childcare Grant — see below and verify on GOV.UK.

The eligibility stack for student parents

Before grants, you still need SFE eligibility as a UK home student on a qualifying course. Fee and Maintenance Loan rules depend on residency, previous study, intensity and household income — see fee loan vs Maintenance Loan and how much Maintenance Loan.

Dependants grants then add their own tests (verify each GOV.UK page for your year):

  • PLA — dependent children; household income under the GOV.UK threshold; full-time undergraduate or a course worth at least 120 credits for the year. You do not need to pay for childcare to get PLA. Source: GOV.UK PLA eligibility.
  • Childcare Grant — full-time (120+ credits); child under 15 (under 17 if SEN); income-assessed student finance; household income under the published one-child / two+ thresholds; registered Ofsted provider; and you (and your partner) must not claim Tax-Free Childcare, UC / Working Tax Credit childcare help, or NHS childcare help. Source: GOV.UK Childcare Grant eligibility.
  • ADG — another adult depends on you financially (not your child); household income under the GOV.UK threshold; not with a Postgraduate Loan; dependant must not be a student getting student finance. Source: GOV.UK ADG eligibility.

Reassurance: Many mature parents start with a foundation year or funded undergraduate route. Use the free eligibility check first, then map loans and grants against GOV.UK — do not assume last year’s figures still apply.

Parents’ Learning Allowance — current figures

According to GOV.UK, Parents’ Learning Allowance is £50 to £2,024 a year depending on household income. It is paid in up to three instalments, is not repaid, sits on top of other undergraduate student finance, and will not affect benefits or tax credits. You cannot get PLA with a Postgraduate Loan. Sources: GOV.UK Parents’ Learning Allowance and what you’ll get.

PLA helps with course-related costs when you have dependent children. It is separate from the Childcare Grant — you can get PLA without paying for childcare.

Childcare Grant — rates, CCGPS and payment

GOV.UK states you can get 85% of your childcare costs, or a fixed weekly maximum — whichever is less. Current maxima: £199.62 a week for one child and £342.24 a week for two or more. Children must be under 15 (under 17 if SEN). You must be a full-time HE student studying 120 credits or more in the year on a single course. Sources: GOV.UK Childcare Grant and what you’ll get.

Money goes into the Childcare Grant Payment Service (CCGPS). Your provider requests payment; after your course starts you approve (typically weekly). Not for deposits or upfront costs. Leftover CCGPS funds return to SFE. GOV.UK states income-related benefits, unemployment benefits and Housing Benefit are not affected by CCG — separate from Tax-Free Childcare / UC childcare conflicts.

From 1 August 2026: GOV.UK says you cannot get a Childcare Grant if childcare is provided by a nanny (someone you employ at home). Use a registered childminder or nursery instead — for new and returning students.

Adult Dependants’ Grant

ADG is for students who have an adult who depends on them financially — not a child. GOV.UK lists up to £3,545. It is not repaid and sits on top of other undergraduate student finance, but GOV.UK states it does affect income-related benefits. You cannot get ADG with a Postgraduate Loan, and the dependant adult must not be a student getting student finance. Sources: GOV.UK Adult Dependants’ Grant and what you’ll get.

Extra rules cover household income and who counts as a dependant. For courses starting on or after 1 August 2026, GOV.UK says the adult dependant must live in the UK (pro-rata if only part-year). Check full eligibility before you apply.

How to apply for dependants grants

Apply for PLA, Childcare Grant and ADG online with your main SFE application, or use the Dependants’ Grants form if you have already applied: GOV.UK Dependants’ Grants application.

Allow processing time (GOV.UK often cites around four weeks; evidence can extend this). Keep income, childcare provider and dependant details accurate. Continuing students must reapply each year.

Tip: You cannot get PLA or ADG with a Postgraduate Loan. Undergraduate / foundation-year funded routes are the usual path AF Education discusses with UK home students.

Universal Credit, Tax-Free Childcare and benefits

GOV.UK Childcare Grant eligibility is explicit: you (and your partner) must not claim Tax-Free Childcare, childcare help through Universal Credit or Working Tax Credit, or NHS childcare help. Treat CCG and those supports as generally either/or — confirm on GOV.UK Childcare Grant eligibility before you switch anything.

PLA is described on GOV.UK as not affecting benefits or tax credits; ADG is described as affecting income-related benefits. Wider context: student finance on Universal Credit / benefits and Special Support Element. AF Education does not give benefits advice — verify with GOV.UK or a qualified adviser.

Mature students, foundation years and part-time

Many student parents are mature learners — living arrangements, income and previous study can change outcomes. Light context: university for mature students. Foundation years on a funded path can still sit in the SFE conversation, but credits matter for Childcare Grant / PLA (often 120+). Part-time: part-time Student Finance England.

Frequently asked questions

What is student finance for parents in England?

Usually the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan, plus possible extra grants if you have dependent children or an adult dependant: Parents’ Learning Allowance, Childcare Grant and Adult Dependants’ Grant. Confirm each on GOV.UK and your Notification of Entitlement.

How much is Parents’ Learning Allowance?

GOV.UK states £50–£2,024 a year depending on household income, paid in up to three instalments. It is not repaid, sits on top of other undergraduate student finance, and will not affect benefits or tax credits. Not available with a Postgraduate Loan.

How much Childcare Grant can I get?

85% of childcare costs or the weekly maximum — whichever is less. Maxima on GOV.UK: £199.62 a week for one child and £342.24 a week for two or more. Paid via CCGPS; providers request and you approve after the course starts. Not for deposits or upfront fees.

Can I get Childcare Grant with Universal Credit or Tax-Free Childcare?

GOV.UK eligibility says neither you nor your partner should claim Tax-Free Childcare, childcare help through Universal Credit or Working Tax Credit, or NHS childcare help. Verify the current GOV.UK wording before changing claims.

What is Adult Dependants’ Grant for?

It helps if another adult depends on you financially — not a child. GOV.UK lists up to £3,545. It is not repaid but does affect income-related benefits. Not available with a Postgraduate Loan; the dependant must not be a student getting student finance.

How do I apply for PLA, Childcare Grant or ADG?

Apply online with your main SFE application, or use the Dependants’ Grants form if you have already applied (GOV.UK “student finance application for dependants’ grants”). Reapply each year if you continue studying.

Do these grants have to be repaid?

PLA, Childcare Grant and Adult Dependants’ Grant are grants — GOV.UK describes them as not repaid. Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans are separate and usually are repaid under your plan rules.

Where should student parents start if they are unsure they qualify?

Run the free eligibility checker, then check PLA, Childcare Grant and ADG pages on GOV.UK. AF Education helps UK home students with the funded-course and SFE path for free — only SFE/SLC confirm final amounts on your Notification of Entitlement.
