“When does student finance pay out, and where does the money go?” has two different answers, because Student Finance England (SFE) pays your two main loans in different ways. Your Tuition Fee Loan goes to your university; your Maintenance Loan goes to you. This guide explains both for 2026/27 for UK home students in England. For exact first-payment timing see when is my first student finance payment, and for the termly calendar see student finance payment dates.
General information for UK home students. Not advice from Student Finance England (SFE) or the Student Loans Company. Figures and rules are taken from GOV.UK for the 2026 to 2027 academic year and may change; your SFE account and Notification of Entitlement are decisive. AF Education is not SFE and does not support international students.
Quick answer
Quick answer: SFE pays your Tuition Fee Loan directly to your university in 3 instalments – 25% at the start of term 1, 25% at the start of term 2 and 50% at the start of term 3. Your Maintenance Loan is paid into your own bank account, usually in 3 instalments at the start of each term, once your university confirms you have registered; it can take up to 5 working days to arrive. Your Notification of Entitlement shows your dates (source: GOV.UK – how you’re assessed and paid 2026 to 2027).

How Tuition Fee Loan payments work
You never receive the Tuition Fee Loan yourself. SFE pays it to your university in three parts across the year. As a full-time student you are liable for any part of the Tuition Fee Loan paid to your university from the first day of term – even if you later withdraw, transfer or suspend. That is why leaving early in term 1 still leaves you owing 25% (GOV.UK). See changing or leaving your course.
How Maintenance Loan payments work
Your Maintenance Loan is for living costs and goes to your bank account. You must register at your university before SFE can make your first payment; after that, payments usually arrive at the start of each term. To avoid delays GOV.UK advises you to give SFE your UK bank details before term starts, take any documents your college needs (such as your Notification of Entitlement) when you register, and use the same name on every document (GOV.UK).
Part-time students are paid differently: the Maintenance Loan is paid into your bank account 2 weeks after the start of each term (GOV.UK – part-time students).
