A foundation year is one of the most common routes back into education for adults without recent A levels. The first question most mature students ask is simple: can I get student finance for a foundation year? For eligible UK home students in England, the answer is usually yes, but the amount depends on your subject, your previous study and, from January 2027, the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement.

This guide covers 2026/27 Tuition Fee Loan limits for foundation years, Maintenance Loans, how earlier study affects funding, age rules, the changes for January 2027 starts, and how to choose a foundation course. All funding figures link to GOV.UK. For background on the course itself, see foundation year degrees explained and Access to HE vs foundation year.

General information for UK home students in England, based on GOV.UK guidance checked on 6 October 2026. Figures are for the 2026 to 2027 academic year and can change. AF Education is not Student Finance England (SFE); your SFE assessment decides what you receive.

Quick answer

GOV.UK defines a foundation year as an additional year added to the start of an undergraduate course, which you must pass before continuing to the next year. You may be able to get a Tuition Fee Loan for it, and if you are eligible and study in person, a Maintenance Loan for living costs (GOV.UK: guidance for students studying a foundation year).

Tuition Fee Loan for a foundation year (2026/27)

The amount depends on the subject of your foundation year. GOV.UK gives these maximums for full-time students studying in England:

Foundation year subject typeFull-time Tuition Fee Loan (2026/27)Part-time Tuition Fee Loan (2026/27)
Classroom-based, such as business, social science or humanitiesUp to £5,760Up to £4,315
Science, engineering, subjects allied to medicine, creative and performing artsUp to £9,790Up to £7,335

Sources: GOV.UK: new full-time students and the foundation year guidance. GOV.UK says your first notification of entitlement may show a higher amount for a business, social science or humanities foundation year. The university or college then updates the fee and you get a corrected notice.

In practice, a business or economics foundation year is likely to fall under the classroom-based limit, while a science or engineering one is likely to fall under the higher limit. Always check the fee with the university. For example, compare BSc Economics with Foundation Year and BSc Forensic and Medical Science with Foundation Year at University of Bradford International College.

Maintenance Loan during your foundation year

GOV.UK’s new full-time students page lists these 2026/27 maximum Maintenance Loans:

Where you liveMaximum Maintenance Loan (2026/27)
Living with your parentsUp to £9,118
Living away from your parents, outside LondonUp to £10,830
Living away from your parents, in LondonUp to £14,135
Aged 60 or over on the first day of the first academic year of your courseUp to £4,582

How much you get depends on your household income, and you may not get the full amount. GOV.UK also says that if you are a distance learning student, you can only apply for a Maintenance Loan if you cannot attend your course in person because of a disability. GOV.UK says that if you are over 25 you are classed as an ‘independent student’, so your parents’ income is not included, but a partner’s income is if you live with them (GOV.UK: household income). See our household income assessment guide and how much Maintenance Loan you could get.

Parents and carers: you may be able to get extra help such as the Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance or Adult Dependants’ Grant. See student finance for parents.

Is there an age limit for foundation year funding?

For courses starting before 1 January 2027, GOV.UK says there is no upper age limit for Tuition Fee Loans. If you are 60 or over on the first day of the first academic year, you may get a limited Maintenance Loan if you study full time (GOV.UK: eligibility).

For courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, GOV.UK says you must be under 60 on the first day of your course to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. If you are 60 or above, you may be able to apply for an additional loan for living costs (GOV.UK: LLE eligibility).

I have studied before. Can I still fund a foundation year?

Often, yes, but previous study reduces what you can get. For courses starting before January 2027, GOV.UK’s formula is:

Length of your new course + 1 year − years of previous study = years of Tuition Fee Loan

A foundation year adds a year to the course, so a 3-year degree with a foundation year is a 4-year course. Applying the GOV.UK formula, someone with 1 previous year of study would normally get 4 + 1 − 1 = 4 years of Tuition Fee Loan. Any years you are short are taken from the start of the course, because GOV.UK says remaining years are applied to the final years (GOV.UK: going back to uni or repeating a year).

If you left earlier study because of illness, bereavement, pregnancy or caring, you may be able to get an extra year. See our compelling personal reasons guide. If you already hold a degree, the current rules usually limit funding; see second degree student finance.

Foundation years starting from January 2027 (Lifelong Learning Entitlement)

For most courses starting on or after 1 January 2027, you apply through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). GOV.UK says:

  • A foundation year is eligible as long as it forms part of a bachelor’s degree (LLE eligibility).
  • The Tuition Fee Loan total is up to £39,160, and extra Tuition Fee Loan may be available for courses longer than 4 years, including courses with a foundation year. A lower amount may apply for lower-fee foundation year study (LLE student loans).
  • Government guidance for providers says the way foundation year fee limits are set will not change under the LLE. Foundation years starting before 1 January 2027 are funded through the current system, and those starting from 1 January 2027 are funded through the LLE (GOV.UK: foundation years fee cap guidance).
  • Applications for LLE funding open at the end of October 2026, and you need a new student finance account.

Read the full Lifelong Learning Entitlement guide. January 2027 foundation-year options include BSc (Hons) Economics with Foundation Year, BA (Hons) Digital Marketing and Advertising with Foundation Year and BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations with Foundation Year at University of Greenwich International College.

Entry requirements for mature students

Foundation years exist for people who do not meet standard degree entry, so requirements are usually lower. Examples from course records on our site:

Requirements vary by university and can change, so AF Education confirms them before you apply. If you are unsure whether you need GCSE maths and English, read do you need GCSE maths and English for university?

Fitting a foundation year around work and family

Many funded courses AF Education supports need about 1 to 2 campus days a week, usually around 2 to 4 hours a day, so plenty of students keep working. Your exact timetable is confirmed before you enrol. Studying in person also matters for funding, because Maintenance Loans are normally not available for distance learning. Browse options by subject, such as business, psychology or computing, or by university on our partner universities page.

Frequently asked questions

Can mature students get student finance for a foundation year?

Yes, if you meet the residency, course and previous study rules. GOV.UK says you may be able to get a Tuition Fee Loan for a foundation year, plus a Maintenance Loan if you are eligible and study in person.

How much Tuition Fee Loan can I get for a foundation year in 2026/27?

Up to £5,760 full time for classroom-based subjects such as business, social science or humanities, and up to £9,790 for science, engineering, subjects allied to medicine and creative and performing arts, according to GOV.UK.

Is there an age limit for foundation year student finance?

For courses starting before 1 January 2027, GOV.UK says there is no upper age limit for Tuition Fee Loans. Under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, you must be under 60 on the first day of the course to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan.

Does a foundation year count as a year of previous study?

A foundation year is part of the length of your course, so it is included when SFE works out your entitlement. If you start a foundation year and later return to study, that time can count as previous study.

Can I get a Maintenance Loan for an online foundation year?

Normally not. GOV.UK says distance learning students can only get a Maintenance Loan if they cannot attend in person because of a disability.

What changes for foundation years starting in January 2027?

You apply through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement with a new account. Foundation years that form part of a bachelor’s degree are eligible, and extra Tuition Fee Loan may be available because the course lasts longer than 4 years.

Next steps

A foundation year can be fully funded for many mature students. Check your subject’s fee limit, count any previous study, note your course start date (before or after 1 January 2027), and apply early.
